Meeting Minutes for the Data Mining Project 10/11 6:10 PM

Dr. Perkowski showed up 20 minutes into the meeting.

Choose Roles in the group.
	Michael will take on the role of facilitator/leader. He is =
consistently on campus every day and is the closes to Perkowski. Both =
Tim and Tu work full time and are not at PSU during the day.
	Tim will take on the role of secretary.=20
	Tu will take on the role of process observer.

Old Business:
 	Discuss what each person did on there break

	Tu
	Picked up a copy a Visual C++ tutorial that discusses how to pull =
information in and out of a database. Is approximately 3/4 of the way =
through the tutorial.
	Read the first 4 papers.
		Third paper was password protected.
	Tu believes that he is getting a feel for the theory but is missing =
the particulars for each type of deco,postion..

	Tim
	Purchaseds a book on Visual C++ as a referenence.
	Looked over the Epiinfo. This program is our direct competition in =
many ways and it looks like they will be releasing a windows version =
sometime this year. WE talked about the possibility of writing a =
program that would work under this environment.
	Read over the first four papers. Tim is fairly lost. Understands that =
there are all of these types of decompostion but not sure how they all =
fit together or how they all work.

	Michael
	Read 8 papers several times and thinks he has a fairly good level of =
understanding.


New Business:

	Discuss the PDS document.
	It is Due Wednesday the 19th and Dr. Perkoswki wishes to see the =
document before than. Means that we need to be done on Monday the 17th.

	Went over the example PDS in our notes from class and roughly outline =
each section and what we know.=20

	In Use Purpose and Market:
	Product Title: Data Mining software to aid Doctors with medical =
applications. WE do not yet have a title for the software package.
	Purpose or function the product is to perform: The software will input =
a raw set of data and using Multi Variable Decomposition will suggest =
possible hypothesis that the data suggests. In a medical application =
epidermanlogist will be able to input a large set of data taken from a =
group of people and the program would suggest hypnosis in the form of =
people with A and B who did C got sick. This is the most rudimentary of =
examples and does not fully detail the full capabilities of the =
product.
	Predicable unintended markets: Any application where there is a large =
non full specified dataset that a user wishes to generate hypothesis's =
from.
	Special feature of this product: The program will be based on =
non-standard meothods of mining using logical decomposation methods. =
The program will have a degree of interactilty while still being easy =
to use.
	What type of products will out product compete against: Other Data =
Mining application but at this point there is no poduct that will input =
a set of data with some user parameters and output suggestions like our =
product will do. At this point we have Epi Info and C4.5 (a famous =
decomposition program) there are quite a few programs that cost money. =
Examples of these need to be found. Dr. Perkoscki suggests looking on =
his web page and see about possible links to books that would have some =
examples in them.
	What is the intended market: State Epiderminoligists working with in =
the United States
	Why is there are need for this program: As stated above there is no =
program that does what we intened to do. Epideminologists do all of =
this work by hand. At this point there are databases and programs that =
do functional decomposition. We intend to link these two with the =
program. =20
	Relationship with this product and other company products: We have no =
other products but Alan Mishchecnko has most of the decomposition part =
of the project coded. We need and interface.
	Anticipated market demand. There are approximately 1000 =
epidemiologists in the United States.
	Target Company Selling Price: At this time we expect this to be Free =
Ware


Functional Relationship:
	Functional Performance: The program will taking in a set of data, =
convert this data to its internal format, process the data, and produce =
a netlist. Using Visual C++ as the development environment. The program =
has to read in data from a number of databases. Initial requirements =
are to read in the data from a dBase database. This means it either the =
program translated formats and converts the data to its internal =
format. Need to determine various database conversation formats. We =
need to do a little more research into which functions this program =
will execute and how these work before we can outline the process thje =
data part of the functional performance. Program will output a netlist =
in language that has yet to be determined. Right now we are operating =
on the principle that the language will be some for of If A and B or C =
than D. A evolution of this language will occur as we test it and find =
what is the easist for users to understand and what makes sense based =
on the output. A spec should be written for the language and included =
in the PDS.
Physical requirements: Program will run on Windows 95 or better (this =
includes 2000).=20
Service environment: Since this is a software product the product will =
exist on storage media at all times. It will be isolated on a system. =
The product will be able to compress onto hard media like a CDROM or a =
3.5 disk or downloaded over the internet or local network. The source =
code will be keep by the project group and is not open source.=20
Life Cycle Issues:
Useful life: The life cycle of a revision of software is approximately =
3 years.
Reliability: The product will have good error handling and a FAQ =
detailing possible bugs in the code.=20
Robustness: The product will be tested for bugs and several versions =
will be release. An alpha release will be given to Doctors to be tested =
for bugs and interface issue. A beta release will be offered to other =
students to test for bugs. The program will be as clean as possible.
Maintainability: We intend to leave the product alive for the next =
project group that works on it. This means good documentation standards =
in the code itself as well as good documentation in the form of a =
manual and project notes.
Diagnosability: There will be good notes in the code so someone =
unfamiliar with the structure can fix the code and know what each =
section will do. We will build some test cases with know answers so =
people can benchmark the program.=20
Installability: The manual will have a section on installation. =
Installation should be clean and not require the user to take many odd =
steps.
Retirement from service: New versions will be released online.
Cost of operation: None
	Human Factors:
		Esthetics: The window structure will be pleasing to the eye and not =
grating/
	Man Machine interface: The interface will be tested and refined with =
Doctors to make sure the application works for them.
User Training: Simple but strong help. Tutorials in the form of power =
point presentation that would eventual move to the project web page. =
These tutorials will walk through sample files.=20

	Time to market: Alpha Version will be code complete in 6 weeks. The =
last week of February.
	Manufacturing Requirements: All of the computers in the college of =
engineering can support Visual C++. Perkoski will be getting each of us =
more space so we can install Visual C++ and develop the product.
	Suppliers: The only supplies we need are from Dr Steingart who will =
supply us with the first database.=09
	Trademarks: We do not have one yet but we are working on a trademark.
	Financial Performance: This is strictly not for profit.

only 1 or 0. In multivariable decomposition any variable can have any =
number of possible responses.
