Dr. Fraser's research is directed at exploiting deterministic aspects of complex signals. The research is motivated by dynamical systems work in recent decades that has shown many phenomena to be chaotic in a strict sense. Using synthetic signals, his group has tested the performance of our techniques on detection and forecasting tasks. For detection, one asks "How much noise does it take to mask a signal?". Forecasting consists of guessing, on the basis of past measurements, what values of future measurements are likely. They have have also been examining measured data from various sources. In particular the interest is in speech compression and characterizing hemispheric weather patterns. While the linear models cannot be outperformed, the tests indicate that there is still room for improvement.
