PSU INTELLIGENT ROBOTICS LABORATORY: NEWS FOR YEAR 2001



  1. Winter quarter Professor Chien Wern teaches a new class in industrial robotics. He and his students fixed two Seiko robots and use them in manufacturing projects.

  2. January. Hexapod Centaur (vel Giant Hexapod) robot design has started. Bjorn Chambless and Jamie Hudson are the leaders.

  3. January The new Seiko RT 3200 robot arrived from IBM factory in Mexico via California Tech museum.

  4. January Small hexapod robot was sent to Dr. Andrzej Buller to Japan as part of our collaboration with ATR.

  5. February Famous polish film director Krzysztof Zanussi visits our laboratories and writes two related articles in polish weekly POLITYKA.

  6. February A big group of high school students visited the lab during the Open House.

  7. March The PEOPLEBOT start to interact by voice with students. Centaur has new stronger motors and hopefully will start soon to walk.

  8. Spring term Dr. Mishchenko visits Europe (France, Germany and Ukraine) on NSF/DAAD grant.

  9. May and June Professor Perkowski presented invited papers and lectures in Silesian Technical University, Gliwice, Poland, Polish Academy of Sciences, and KAIST, Korea. Hopefully, some students from this University will become interested in walking robots. Several papers written by lab members were published and presented.

  10. June Mike Levy completes his bio-inspired robot hexapod.

  11. June Professor Bernd Steinbach visits our lab. on NSF/DAAD grant for "Constructive Induction for Data Mining".

  12. Summer term Professor Perkowski has a group of Saturday Academy students who build several walking robots and talking heads.

  13. Summer term Dr. Kerntopf from Technical University of Warsaw is a visitor to our lab and works with Drs. Perkowski and Mishchenko.

  14. August Professor Perkowski is the general chair and Dr. Mishchenko is a Program Chair of Third Oregon Symposium on Logic, Design and Learning in Portland, Oregon, August 2001.

  15. August Dr. Andrzej Buller from ATR, affiliated member of the lab visited the lab and presented a seminar.

  16. Fall term Work on Robot Colonies and Robot Immitation started. Martin Lukac joins as a new Ph.D. student working in Artificial Life approach to robotics.
