Maintenance of the Free Archie Server

@everyfooting Author: rootd// Editor: ensley // Texinfo: rootd@| @| 3 December 1994

This chapter describes how to maintain a free archie server while it is running. The server will automatically update the database periodically, but you need to build the database manually at the end of installation, and you need to download the list of ftp sites periodically (about once a month, plus during installation).

Downloading the Site List

The current site list can be obtained via anonymous ftp from ftp.ee.pdx.edu in the /pub/freearchie directory. The file is called "sitelist" and is not compressed. Download it and put it in the INSTALLDIR/ftplist directory.

In addition to downloading the site list during the initial installation, you should download it about once a month. Failure to download the file will mean that your server does not have the most up-to-date list of anonymous ftp sites, but your server will still function normally.

Manually Building the Database

To build the database, you need to run the INSTALLDIR/bin/lslr-getter and then INSTALLDIR/bin/database-builder. This should be done when you first install the archie system. The archie system will automatically rerun these program every night to keep the database up-to-date.

Be warned that the first time you build the database these programs will take a very long time to run and will use up significant network bandwidth. The initial construction of the database is best planned for non-peak hours (at night or on a weekend).
